Find the Free Bookstore Gift Cards!

On Tuesday, May 1, the Navigators group will be giving away gift cards for the USM LAC bookstore. The cards will be in marked envelopes in general areas around the USM LAC campus and are free for the taking for whoever finds them. Please, only one per person.

There's Still Time to Apply for Scholarships!

Several local scholarships are still open for applications. Don't let these opportunities for scholarship money pass you by! Information with links for each scholarship are provided below:

  • Musgrave Fund Scholarship. Five $1000 scholarships for ADULT STUDENTS who have lived in Maine at least 5 years and are current residents of Androscoggin County will be awarded. Deadline is April 30, 2012.

  • The Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce Adult Scholarship. Applicants must be employed 20 or more hours by a business that is a Chamber member and  at least 25 years old.

  • Community Banks Scholarship. This scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine with initial pledges from Androscoggin Bank, Auburn Savings Bank and Mechanics Savings Bank to match gifts from the citizens of the Androscoggin County. The scholarships will support students attending USM's Lewiston-Auburn College.

Applying to the OT Program

If you plan to apply to the Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) program to be accepted for the fall of 2013, your application MUST be completed by 10/1/2012. Scheduling of interviews will begin in fall of 2012 for admittance to fall 2013.

Once your application is completed you will be scheduled for a writing sample to determine if you will proceed to the interview phase. Application, writing sample, and interview (no test scores of any kind are required) comprise the entire admissions cycle of the MOT program.

Get your registration on! Register now for fall! USM LAC is celebrating "Six Weeks to Success" and there are lots of exciting events taking place to get students ready to register for the fall. Watch for coupons and registration parties! Best of all - and this is the bomb - if you register for your fall classes by midnight April 27(tonight!), you will automatically qualify for a chance to win free textbooks! We will be drawing the names of 5 lucky people who will have their LAC textbooks paid for!*

This huge initiative is being funded by the USM LAC Student Government Association! Spread the word! Remember, payment for the fall is not due until August 15.

Also, students who register for fall classes by April 27 will also qualify to win their very own reserved parking space for the semester!

*Some of the fine print: Undergraduate students only, textbooks must be for LAC classes only and must be purchased in person from the USM Bookstore in Lewiston. Complete details are online.

Course in Focus:
LOS 330 Leadership in Different Cultures (Online)
In this class students will explore leadership practices in multiple cultures and how our increasing interactions with these diverse leadership styles have changed our conception of leadership in the U.S. This course will help students determine the skills they will need to take on a leadership role in a global society.

LGBT Group Forming

If any students are interested in a LGBT group here at USM LAC they may email Bridget Goyette at bridget.goyette@maine.edu or call 207-754-1221. Bridget is measuring the amount of interest in hopes of starting a group here on campus for this fall.

Campus Safety Information

With recent campus incidents across the U.S., the USM LAC Safety and Security Committee would like to remind everyone about about the emergency procedures that USM LAC has in place.

  1. Each classroom and break room has an IMMEDIATE EMERGENCY PROCEDURE GUIDELINES manual. This manual can also be found on the USM LAC web site.
  2. Procedures covered in this manual include Armed Person on Campus, Bomb Threats, Chemical Spills, Fires, Medical Emergencies, Court Ordered Protection Papers and more.
  3. The campus is equipped with a Mass Communication System that will alert everyone in the building on what to do in the event of an incident. If this system is activated, please follow the instructions given.
  4. The campus is also equipped with 2 First Aid Stations. One is in the Student Success office and the other is located in the maintenance office. Each kit has basic first aid supplies including an emergency blanket.
  5. The campus also has 2 AED units. One is the connector hallway between the South Lobby and LearningWorks. The other is located near the Café next to the vending machines.
  6. The campus Safety and Security Committee hold regular meetings every other month. All meetings are open to everyone.

Ride the Bus on Us!

USM LAC is now offering FREE BUS PASSES to all USM students! Students may get their free pass (an $18 value) at the Student Success Center. Passes are good for one month and may be used for all travel on the local city bus, Citylink. With the latest surge in the price of gas, riding the bus has become a great way of getting to campus and around town!

Passes are good for one month and are not transferable. Students must be currently enrolled at USM. A new pass must be obtained each month and passes may not be obtained in advance. Stop by the Student Success Center today for your free student pass and get on the bus!

Please remember that the city bus has a new designated stop on campus! Riders that use the bus will no longer have to use the shelter on Saratoga Street. Instead, the new bus stop will will be located at the corner of our newest building. Please see our information page for more information. The new stop will allow riders to wait inside, where it is warm, safe and dry. The change was made in cooperation with the Transit Authority, Western Maine Transportation and the USM LAC Safety and Security Committee.

**Congratulations!** You've discovered the secret message! Email USM LAC now to be entered into a drawing for USM LAC Coffee Mug! Stand Against Racism Event

The YWCA of Central Maine cordially invites you to join them In taking a STAND AGAINST RACISM. USM LAC's very own Dean Joyce T. Gibson will be one of the keynote speakers! The event takes place on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at 9:45 AM at 130 East Avenue, Lewiston. RSVP to abigger@bates.edu

You can apply to graduate NOW through Mainestreet by going to the Student Center and then under the "Academics Section" choose  "Apply to Graduate" from the pull down menu.

SGA Benefit Drive

The USM LAC Student Government Association is hosting a Benefit Drive to collect food items, resources, clothes, pet supplies, hygiene items, etc. for the Free Exchange resource here at USM LAC. The Free Exchange is located in the faculty lounge entrance area.This is a wonderful resource for students, faculty, & staff who may be in need. The drop areas for this drive are in the student lounge & the Student Success Center. There will be a box in both locations for people to donate/drop items. Donors may put their name into a drawing for a drawing of one of 3 USM Bookstore gift cards.

Campus Safety Advocates

Members from the Sexual Assault Crisis Center and Safe Voices will be on campus Thursdays during this semester, from Noon - 3 p.m., providing information for students on sexual assault or abuse.

On Mondays and Tuesdays, Campus Safety Project-Peer Educator, Lindamarie McDonald will have office hours from 11am - 3:30 p.m. in Room #133 for anyone who may have concerns on personal safety issues, or call the office at 753-6632

Cafe L-A

The Cafe has announced their summer hours:

Monday - Thursday 8.30 am - 2 pm from May 14 - June 28
Friday: Closed
The Cafe will be closed for the months of July and most of August, opening when fall classes begin.

TRIO is Here!

Are you a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year student? Do you want some additional support in meeting your goal of graduating? USM students may be eligible to apply to TRiO at USM if they meet just one of the following criteria:

  • Neither of your parents graduated from a four year college
  • Meet government income guidelines based on taxable income (currently $33,525 for a family of 4)
  • Have a documented physical, mental, learning, or ADD/ADHD disability

USM Admissions Available on Campus

Do you know someone who is considering applying to USM or has questions about the applications process? USM Admissions Counselor Chris Fox will be available to meet with prospective students and applicants on the following dates May 9 & 23.

Chris can discuss application materials and processes and generally offer Undergraduate Admission Services to any and all students who may be considering starting their college careers a little "closer to home". He will be available for meetings from 8:30 am - 4 pm. Meetings are scheduled through USM LAC Student Success office. Please call 207-753-6536 to make an appointment.
